This work applies linguistic theories of address to the ancient Greek language. It is based on a corpus of 11,891 vocatives from 25 prose authors from Herodotus to Lucian, and on comparative data from Artistophanes, Menander and others. The data is analyzed using techniques from sociolinguistics.
