This study examines a political-military tradition in sub-Saharan Africa which has survived colonialism as well as the Cold War. Five modern insurgencies are evaluated: Madagascar 1947, Kenya (Mau Mau) 1952-63, Cameroon (UPC) 1955-70, Congo/Zaire (Kwilu) 1964-68, and Mozambique (RENAMO) 1977-92.
