Contributor Bio: Kreis, Georg Georg Kreis is Professor of Modern General History and History of Switzerland at the University of Basel. Since 1993 he has been Director of the interdisciplinary Europainstitut. In the last thirty years, he has authored a large number of publications concerning Swiss neutrality, the period of World War II, censorship of the press, secret military relations between Switzerland and France, acquisition of «degenerate art in Basel, etc. In 1993 his study Staatsschutz in der Schweiz. Die Entwicklung von 1935-1990, commissioned by the Swiss Federal Council, was published, and from 1996 to 2001, Kreis was a member of the «Bergier-Kommission, the independent experts' commission concerned with the Swiss role in World War II.
