Born in Ghana and educated in North America and Europe, Kofi Annan was elected Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1996, the first Black African to serve in that position and the first to come up through the ranks. Many regard Annan as a secretary-general on par with Dag Hammarskjold, his great predecessor of a half-century ago.
