The incredible hardships of farm life were softened by the beauty of nature, an abundance of home-grown food, and the warmth of a close-knit, loving family, as well as her dreams of love in the arms of a handsome schoolmate. As an adult, she marries, drops the "Mary" from her name, and becomes Mrs. Frances Fowler, and later the Widow Fowler.
