Thirty-seven-year-old writer Chuck Valentine is a man in crisis. Recently divorced and troubled by the demands of single fatherhood, he longs for love and the chance to rebuild his life.

Figuring he has nothing to lose, he joins a local Pentecostal church, becoming well-acquainted with its eccentric community. His new Christian friends profess to know the truth to leading a happy life and are eager to try and "save" him.

Yet Chuck soon learns that, among the faithful, all is not as it appears. As hope turns to disillusionment, he is forced to confront his troubled past and the existential despair that has long plagued his existence.
