This book is the history of Prince Edward Island from its discovery in 1534 until the departure of Lieutenant-Governor Ready in A. D. 1831. The work also contains information on the "French Regime," the deportation, and the annexation to Nova Scotia; it also discusses the government, with chapters devoted to key governmental officials; Governor Patterson and Lieutenant-Governors Fanning, Desbarres, Smith and Ready; churches; St. Paul's Church and the Parish of Charlotte, the Roman Catholic Church, the Presbyterian Church, the Methodist Church and the Baptist Church; and early chief justices, the first seven being Duport, Stewart, Cochran, Thorpe, Colclough, Tremlett and Archibald. An appendix includes Patterson's commission as governor, his instructions and his commission as lieutenant-governor. A bibliography, the original full-name plus subject index, and illustrations complete this work.
