This book is a collection of Tolstoi's greatest stories. It opens with the story Two Hussars written by Tolstoi at the age of twenty-six just after he had returned to St. Petersburg from active service in the Crimea, and closes with After the Ball, the last of the great writer's stories which was not published until after his death.
The works included in this collection are representative of his writing over a full half century.
