The afternoon was hot and steamy due to an earlier thunderstorm. There had been a lot of rain that summer-too much. But then, it was an unusual summer in many ways. There was more heat than normal, and Georgia in the summer is hot enough. The heat coupled with the rain turned much of the South into a lush jungle. It was hard for people to avoid the whispered worries about the greenhouse effect. The plants didn't mind; they exploded with unprecedented growth in the raised humidity. They spread faster and farther with each storm. Maybe it was the nitrogen raining down when the lightning split the air. Whatever it was, the vegetation loved it. And kudzu loved it the most.
