When Fred moves into his home as a young man, he sees a small tree in his backyard, after a time they become friends, and Fred begins to enjoy the wonderful things that the tree gives. Shade in the summer, colorful leaves in the fall. However after a time Fred becomes bothered by what he feels are the trees bad habits. Eventually cutting the tree down. Once he cuts the tree down Fred realizes that the old tree was indeed something special, and takes steps to begin anew the circle of life. This wonderful children's book by Richard Schlatter teaches children that we all are stewards of the nature around us, and will show them the importance of respecting and taking care of the gifts nature gives us.
