Isabel sprang aside, barely in time to save her life; and the heavy stand, dashing against an angle of the wall, was shivered into a thousand pieces;--one of them flew against Isabel's cheek, cutting a slight gash, and the blood trickled down her face, which was white with terror. A cry of fright and anger rang amidst us, and Clara, seeing Isabel stagger, and her face streaming with blood, feared she had killed her,--for, blind with rage, she had not seen what the inkstand had struck; and, uttering a scream of horror, she sprang away toward the woods. We gathered around Isabel, and dozens of busy handkerchiefs were offered, to efface the traces of the scene. The wound was not very deep, and, as the inkstand had fortunately been almost empty, all stains and blots were soon removed, and we ceased our attentions to Isabel to pour out reproaches against the miserable Clara. But Isabel stopped us; she had seated herself on the grass, and was weeping passionately. The sudden and near approach of terrible danger had cooled her anger completely; she looked up, with her eyes full of tears, and said, imploringly,--"' Oh, don't, girls, please! I forgive her heartily--I am sure she is feeling most miserable, and I was wrong to call her names. Pray, let us go and look for her.' So we went, and found her at the edge of the woods, flung upon the bank, sobbing in a tempest of fear and remorse and passion.
