This history of China, published by the Hakluyt Society in 1854, is based mainly on the writings of the Jesuit Ferdinand Verbiest (1623-1688), a missionary who, despite violent opposition, became Head of the Mathematical Board and Director of the Beijing Observatory for the Kangxi Emperor.
