George Thomas Staunton
Sir George Thomas Staunton (1781–1859) was a key figure in Anglo-Chinese relations. The aim of the ultimately unsuccessful 1816 embassy was to again press the Chinese for improved conditions for trade. Published in 1824, this is a valuable document in the understanding of the background to Anglo-Chinese relations into the twentieth century.
