Asa Gray
The botanist Asa Gray (1810–88) was important in unifying taxonomic knowledge of North American flora. The second volume of this 1889 two-volume selection edited by Charles Sprague Sargent (1841–1927) contains Gray's lesser-known essays on botanical topics and biographical sketches of influential naturalists, covering a period of forty-five years.
