Contributor Bio:  Barros Arana, Diego Diego Barros Arana (1830-1907). Chile Era hijo de Diego Antonio Barros Fern ndez de Leiva y Martina Arana Andonaegui, ambos de clase alta. Su madre muri cuando l ten a cuatro a os, y fue educado por una t a paterna que le dio una formaci n muy religiosa. Estudi en el Instituto Nacional lat n, gram tica, filosof a, historia santa y franc s. Su inter s por la historia se despert tras sus lecturas del Compendio de la historia civil, geogr fica y natural del Abate Molina, las Memorias del general William Miller, la Historia de la revoluci n hispanoamericana del espa ol Mariano Torrente y la Historia f sica y pol tica de Chile de Claudio Gay. Su trabajo historiogr fico se inici en 1850, tras la publicaci n de un art culo en el peri dico La Tribuna sobre Tupac Amaru y de su primer libro, Estudios hist ricos sobre Vicente Benavides y las campa as del sur. Barros Arana se decant en pol tica por el liberalismo y se enfrent a los c rculos cat licos. Fue opositor encarnizado del gobierno de Manuel Montt, y su casa fue allanada en busca de armas (que en efecto se ocultaban all ). Tras este incidente tuvo que exiliarse en Argentina, donde hizo amistad con Bartolom Mitre. Regres en 1863 y fue nombrado rector del Instituto Nacional, y ocup el decanato de la Facultad de Filosof a y Humanidades de la Universidad de Chile, as como la rector a. Su paso por el instituto desencaden una tormenta que quebr la alianza de gobierno conocida como Fusi n Liberal-Conservadora. En la etapa final de su vida se dedic a su obra historiogr fica y fue enviado a Argentina en una misi n para definir los fronteras.
