Actu en la vida pol tica defendiendo las ideas democr ticas;fund el peri dico La Democracia, en 1863, y apoy el republicanismo individualista. A causa de un art culo contrario a Isabel II, fue separado de su c tedra de historia de Espa a de la universidad central, lo que provoc manifestaciones estudiantiles y la represi n de la Noche de san Daniel (10 abril 1865). Castelar conspir contra Isabel II y se exil en Francia, donde permaneci hasta la revoluci n de septiembre (1868). A su regreso fue nombrado triunviro por el partido republicano junto a Pi y Margall y a Figueras. Diputado por Zaragoza a las cortes constituyentes de 1869, al proclamarse la I rep blica ocup la presidencia del poder ejecutivo. Gobern con las cortes cerradas y combati a carlistas y cantonales. Tras la reapertura de las cortes, su gobierno fue derrotado, lo que provoc el golpe de estado del general Pav a (3 enero 1874). Disuelta la rep blica y restaurada la monarqu a borb nica, represent a Barcelona en las primeras cortes de Alfonso XII. Defendi el sufragio universal, la libertad religiosa y un republicanismo conservador y evolucionista (el posibilismo). Emilio Castelar muri en 1899 en San Pedro del Pinatar.
