The resultant lack of understanding of the key operational changes that have occurred in the organization of the staff hinders effective operational planning and mission command. The uncertainty and complexity of today's operating environment demands a closer look at the effectiveness of operational staffs. Providing a more complete discussion of the doctrinal and operational changes in the realm of protection over the last forty years requires a broad body of research spanning several disciplines. Because of the myriad complex tasks compiled under the protection cell, the research is limited to three primary areas of survivability, CBRN operations, and operational area security.
