Tacitus, Thule and Caledonia: the Achievements of Agricola's Navy in Their True Perspective (British Archaeological Reports British Series)
Stan Wolfson
This book, slightly eccentric in style, is an attempt to prove a pet theory of the author's, that the Roman navy under Agricola reached Shetland, landing at Lerwick as a harbour, which should be identified as the Ultima Thule of Tacitus' account. To do so Stan Wolfson provides a detailed textual reappraisal of mentions of Thule in both geographical and literary classical texts, and particularly of the crucial sections of the Agricola.
