Karia and the Hekatomnids: the Creation of a Dynasty (British Archaeological Reports British Series)
Anne Marie Carstens
Using predominantly archaeological evidence this study looks at the strategies employed by the Hekatomnids to build and bolster their dynasty. Carstens examines architecture, sculpture coinage and inscriptions to reveal a systematic attempt to create a distinctive Hekatomnid iconographic style which emphasises its Anatolian roots to instill a sense of legitimacy but includes elements of the Classical and Persian traditions, "Creolization as political strategy" as Carstens puts it. Includes detailed reassessments of the Maussolleion at Halikarnassos and the Sanctuary of Zeus Labraundos.
