In the latter half of the 19th century, gold was discovered in Montana, leading to the biggest gold rush in American history since the California Gold Rush of 1848. The town of Bannack sprang up overnight with miners living in tents, caves, shanties, huts, wagons, and any other shelter they could find.

European immigrants weren?t the only people to populate the Western United States. The Chinese, many of whom had become expert miners during the California Gold Rush, went to Montana to work to mines abandoned by white miners. The Chinese, through hard work and diligence, turned mines thought by whites to be worthless, into valuable assets.

Although the Chinese were industrious, they seldom fought back even when brutalized by whites and some of the native Indian populations. That is, of course, until the arrival of Chang. The Yellow Chief sought revenge for his murdered Chinese comrades?even if it meant fighting alone against the entire Blackfoot tribe?
