Life is difficult for the hardworking Jones family. Aunt Grace Jones, her son Willie, and his daughter Talu do their best to survive in the rural, destitute Louisiana town of Double Bridges. But when Augustus Riley is elected sheriff, life becomes even more difficult. A sharecropper-turned-lawman, Riley despises the black race, and he vows to make their lives miserable.

Sheriff Riley especially despises Willie, and he stops at nothing to antagonize him. Willie sends for his lifelong friend Benjamin Ford, who travels from Toronto, Canada, to help the Jones family deal with the malicious behavior of the new sheriff. The situation escalates from bad to worse when the sheriff first kills Willie's prized hounds and then attempts to drown Willie in the local pond. Willie Jones vows revenge and its repercussions threaten to tear this family apart.

A work of historical fiction, Double Bridges narrates the story of one family's battle with southern injustice that tests their will and grinds away at their everyday existence.
