My Friends the Women: I am now to begin a special course of lectures of an advisory character that will involve very little that will be new to you physiologically. My first topic will be about the care of your lives during pregnancy. What it is to a man and a woman to be bound to each other in equal relation to a human life in its most dependent, helpless stage of existence, is one of the most inviting themes for thought and reflection to the moralist. I have no voice or pen to portray what it has been to me to realize that there has been one woman and three young lives solely dependent upon my care and toils, for all that has made life of worth to them, nor what of life it has been to me to have the abiding inspiration of their needs and their affection. I know nothing so drear in all human experience as a midnight ride in the country in the winter season. The darkness, the silence, the gloom, with all nature cold in a seeming death beyond resurrection, all tend to make one feel that he alone is left of all the living. During such hours how inspiring, warming has been the thought of the peaceful sleepers at home, how elevating to the soul to do, to suffer and to endure, as in the gloom of a graveyard, that they might have more of life. A human life to reach its highest perfection, must habitually realize the happiness of caring for the dependent ones, of living for them.
