"Gunshots shatter the silence of the night. Dutch Evans- an ex-medical student, ex police detective and rodeo cowboy, who owns a working ranch and freelances as a private investigator is rudely awakened.

He finds two of his red angus cattle have been mutilated then slaughtered. His quest for answers leads him to the ranch of Jim Haystack. Not only has haystack had two black angus calves similarly slaughtered, but his first wife hade been mutilated and murdered.

The nearby sparsely populated semi-ghost town offers more questions, than answers. Dutch feels that every abandoned building contains secrets. He tries to remain focused on the cattle mutilations, but finds himself deeply immersed in local homicide investigations.

He becomes involved in an unlikely romace which distracts him from his methodical investigation. He soon is in immediate peril and becomes prey for a vengeful predator.
