Lila Cortez leads a lonely mundane life, until she meets up with a brash young cadet from New Mexico, named Rusty Begay. She agrees to attend a military ball with him, despite the fact that she has a boyfriend back home. They write to each other for several months, all the while falling in love. Complications arise, and she abruptly halts her correspondence, with no explanation, breaking his heart. He joins the air corp, becoming a helicopter pilot in Iraq. After his tour, he decides to track her down, and demand some answers. They become a couple, but a cloud hovers over their heads in the guise of her ex.
