On 23rd April, 2006 several chimpanzees broke out of Tacugama, a chimpanzee sanctuary in Sierra Leone. Most returned on their own within a few days but one alpha male named Bruno never did. This prompted the author to ask 'Why?' Bruno: Memoirs of a Chimpanzee is a fictional reconstruction of the life of this chimpanzee attempting to explain why a chimpanzee retired into a sanctuary would escape into the wild. Bruno's behavior teaches us that freedom is an innate desire in the animal world.
