The Win is set in the Pacific Northwest, in Vancouver, British Columbia. The principal character, Kate, is a woman in her late thirties emerging from the chrysalis of an oppressive marriage into a mid-life career as a lawyer. In the time frame of the book, Kate discovers and grows from roots that include a birth mother who is Haida. "They say that a lawyer who represents herself has a fool for a client. I had handled my own divorce for nine months, and so far, had found this to be true."
