The River Jez Butterworth
The River
Jez Butterworth
A bewitching new play from Jez Butterworth, the award-winning author of the Broadway hit Jerusalem.
On a moonless night in August when the sea trout are ready to run, a man brings his new girlfriend to the remote family cabin on the cliffs, where he has come for the fly-fishing since he was a boy. But she's not the only woman he has brought here, or indeed the last. Jez Butterworth?s The River asks when we find each other, are we trying to recapture someone we once lost?
The River premiered at London?s Royal Court Theatre in 2012. It will make its US premiere in October 2014, with a Broadway production starring Hugh Jackman.
“The River… tantalizes and teases and whets an audience?s appetites… Just as waterways rarely follow a straight path, neither does a play that gradually accrues in pain and deception, self-directed as much as not, though to say much more would spoil the skin-prickling finish, which prompts a reconsideration of all that has gone before. I can?t wait to see it again.? – New York Times
“Strange, eerie, tense and, on a single viewing, slightly unfathomable… Endlessly mysterious… Confirms that Butterworth possesses a singular talent.? – The Guardian
