Bible Reading in the Early Church:
Adolf Harnack
All that need be said of the interest and importance of the question of the use of the Holy Scriptures in theE arly Church has been set forth in the I ntroduction. The History of theN ew Testament includes not only the history of its versions in various languages, but also the history of its use. A gain, the history of the use is also, in its first stages at least, included in the subject of Introduction to theN ew Testament, because the question in what sense the collection of writings known as theN ew Testament was regarded as aC anon of religion is not decided by saying that it was regarded as canonical, but can only be answered by finding out what use was actually made of this collection. No objection, therefore, can be raised against our including the following investigation in ourN ew Testament Studies which deal principally with the subject of Introduction to theN ew Testament. The public use of theN ew Testament in the ancient Church is, as a matter of course, included in every considerable work on the History of the Canon of Scripture cf. Glaue sD ie Voiiesung heiliger Schriften im Gottesdie7iste (1907) and it is simply an oversight that the private use has not also been taken into consideration.
