The Katar Legacy is the first in a series (the back cover description goes into specific detail).
Book one follows a number of characters in a revolution against the Katar--the ruling elite families of the five major city states. Tsom, a young thief whose mother has been murdered by the Katar ten years ago, stumbles into the revolution and deals with his childhood hatred and his growing worry that the lines between ally and enemy are not well delineated.
The concept of technology and the price for something approaching magic is explored. Nothing is for free and a scarce resource and who controls it is still important.
Book Two should be available in 2014 and continues to build on the history of the world, the various races, and the unresolved war.
