Story is about a squadron of British WW1 fighter aeroplane pilots engaged in fighting German and other Central Powers enemy aircraft. The dangerous missions they performed included air battles and bombing strategic targets on the ground. The commander of the squadron (James) was always concerned for his men's safe return from a mission. He lost some because of the danger involved. The squadron's member pilots made intense sacrifices while flying these dangerous missions. Some crashed and were killed. James was injured and while in the hospital met a doctor (Mary) and they fell in love. They eventually got married even though the war was still going on. They gave birth to twins a boy and a girl. When the war ended he was transferred to London as a flight instructor. Mary followed and continued her medical career.
