Water pollution refers to the contamination of water due to the release of substances into water bodies. The pollution sources that pollute water are broadly categorized into point sources and non-point sources. The contaminants that enter the water bodies from a single and identifiable source are referred to as point sources of water pollution. These include discharges from factory and sewage treatment plant. Non-point sources of water pollution are defined as the contamination caused by the cumulative effect of small amounts of contaminants that accumulate from a large area. The various contaminants that cause water pollution encompass pathogens and a wide spectrum of chemicals. Water pollution can be divided on the basis of its location into surface water pollution and groundwater pollution.
