Max Kendall is an imaginative, quick-witted ten-year-old boy, lonely and isolated in an android quarantine zone, seeking adventure on a desolate climate ravaged Earth in 2126.

William, Max's austere father, once a famous scientist and creator of androids, is obsessed with finding the cause of rebellion and protecting Max, the only legacy of his dead wife.

When Max and William discover Adam, a faceless android boy, Max is overjoyed for he now has a companion, but William not only recognises Adam as a part of his hidden past, but that he harbours the cure for the machine contagion.

Max and Adam become best friends as they are marooned, surviving hostile terrain and evading a military strike determined to destroy all condemned androids.

The secrets of William's past begin to unravel and in a climatic clash, Max embraces his unique destiny to unite human and android and prevent a final end to mankind.
