It's 1957 in Winoretta, Georgia, two chiggers north of Atlanta in the racially divided south. Dixie Lee Mason's family has lost a war against an army of carpenter ants, which has literally eaten them out of house and home, and they are living in the yard. Now the Mason's dilemma rises like a nasty bug bite: how to destroy their condemned ant house without violating those pestilential town arson laws? Dixie watches Daddy's mind become unglued in deranged, failed attempts to save demolition cost, and even the addition of a dilapidated, third-hand Airstream offers little improvement. Although Momma is threatening to abandon them all for the South Pacific again, Dixie adds one more coal to the fire: a forbidden friendship with a young African-American aspiring attorney. But the real fireworks are yet to come, as Dixie tackles family issues which collide with her outrageous ambitions, her sense of justice, and a questionable first love - all culminating in the eventual realization of all she desires.
