Later on, it was published as a book by the publisher S. Fischer. The protagonist Bertha Garlan, a widow living in a small town, meets again in Vienna her childhood sweetheart, the celebrated violin virtuoso Emil Lindbach. For a brief moment, she hopes to escape the provincial narrowness of her existence.
