This retelling of Homer's The Odyssey brings to life a 20th-century hero, Captain Ulysses Xavier Reynolds, a man thrown into the deep end of the Pacific theater in World War II. A consummate seaman, from a long line of such, and, more important, a devout Roman Catholic, Ulysses-also known as Cap X-seems always to be in the right fray at the right time to display the courage and valor with which God has blessed him. Like Odysseus, he longs for home and depends upon Providence.
