Willie Morrison is a Glasgow detective with alcohol and emerging health problems. His wife and son having abandoned him, he endures an apathetic existence, awaiting retirement and his pension. Out of the blue, he is thrown a lifeline with the emergence of a serial killer, operating on an alternating basis between Glasgow and Morrison's native Isle of Skye. A prime mover in the hunt for the killer, Morrison embarks on a journey of criminal investigation, in the course of which, by way of flashbacks and the revisiting of old haunts, he finds himself reflecting on the story of his life - a life blighted by paedophilic abuse and littered with emotional debris, betrayal and hurt.
