In the War of the Roses, the Tresham family sides with the Lancaster clan in England and loses the war against King Edward IV. Gervaise Gresham's father got killed in the merciless fight at the battle of Barnet, being pulled out of a church, and beheaded with the Duke of Somerset and his friends. Gervaise, the young hero of this story, joins the Order of the Knights of St. John and proceeds to their stronghold of Rhodes. He receives an education and numerous fighting instructions to teach him how to survive in many dangerous adventures. Subsequently, he is appointed the commander of a war-galley, and in his first voyage he destroys a fleet of Moorish corsairs and becomes a knight of the Hospitaller. During one of his cruises, the young knight is attacked on shore, captured after a desperate struggle, and sold into slavery in Tripoli. He succeeds in escaping and returns to Rhodes just in time to take part in the defense of that fortress against the vast army of Mehmed II from Turkey. Grandmaster Pierre d' Aubusson supports our hero and puts him at important locations to beat the Moslems. Gervais happily survives and finds his eternal luck.
