Fighting for Ireland
G A Henty
Anno domini 1689 Standing behind King James II we have the Irish Catholic Coalition. Standing behind Prince William of Orange from the Netherlands we have the Protestants. When the Prince of Orange leads an army into Ireland, war breaks out. The Irish Cavalry withstands the English invaders and gives them a difficult time during tough battles. Several towns are conquered, or as some believe, bribed, either way, luck changes sides daily. The French King Louis XIV sends reinforcements and officers to Ireland to help support the Irish. Several French officers are more interested in partying and going home than fighting in these dangerous battles with the English soldiers. The Irish officers complain about the negligent French leadership and the decisions that are made result in disasters for the Irish army. The Irish feel that the French, command given by King James, are more in the way than useful, and they find them obstructing their fight. In the end, the indecisive King James II escapes, seeking sanctuary in France but does not return alive. The Prince of Orange offers a treaty at Limerick and is accepted as King William III. Walter and his friend John are overwhelmed by the hatred and killings caused because of different religious beliefs. They experience anger and abhorrence in their own families because of Cromwell's previous distribution of Irish properties to his loyal soldiers. The young men have challenges in their lives but succeed in keeping their friendship during this terrible time. They help each other in bloody battles, and during sieges, even when they are on opposite sides! They strive to survive fighting, injury, and famine. Finally, they find what they desire most - peace, love, and happiness.
