But when she impulsively steals a rare book from the mysterious man in black, her friend and mentor, the bookseller Mrs. Henley goes missing. Marisol feels responsible for the disappearance and decides to compete with the police detectives assigned to solving the case. Along the way, she travels into the magical world of books themselves - where she'll gather clues scattered throughout a host of traditional literary genres.
