Roger Bowler, aged twenty-one and from Oxford is a navigator on a Lancaster Bomber in WW2. He is sent to America to train as a pilot. Whilst there, he needs an operation. At the hospital, he meets Belinda, an eighteen-year-old nurse-aid. He jilts his English fiancee, Susan and marries Belinda. Due to health problems he fails to become a pilot and is sent back to the U. K. Belinda's uncle, a senator, pulls strings so she can join him. On the way to England her ship is torpedoed.
