Leonid Andreyev (21 August 1871 ? September 12, 1919) was one of the key figures of the Russian Silver age of literature. He produced volumes of short stories before switching to play-writing later in life. He who gets slapped is a deeply serious play based around a circus troupe and has served as the inspiration for films in both Russia and the US.
