These give readers subtle insight into the frailties of Book of Mormon prophets, throw open the windows to shed sunlight on their humanity, are powerful witnesses to the validity of the record, and address the testimony of Joseph Smith that he indeed translated The Book of Mormon by the gift and power of God. Many passages in The Book of Mormon illustrate the difficulty of writing upon plates, and of correcting that which had already been engraven thereon. Mormon, for example, realizing that he had not written exactly what he had intended to, in the abridged record, added many such clarifications.
