As I reworked the original manuscript for republication, I recognized a deeper theme rippling beneath the surface. I was a rebel of sorts, pushing back against my rearing, my culture, my expected destiny, my professional norms, and the larger society about me. My resistance was seldom overt and never quite intentional. It just happened, as if it were meant to be and I was merely an innocent bystander. In effect, I was clueless, an attribute that has defined much of my life according to those who know me the best.
