Fired from his previous teaching position because he refused to enforce oppressive communist policies in the classroom, Jacob Enns and his wife, Naomi, move their family to Alexandrovka, a Mennonite village in southeast Siberia. Near the village lies the Amur River and on the far bank is China. In 1929, conditions under Soviet rule continue to deteriorate until Jacob and Naomi conclude escape from the USSR is their only choice. Eventually the whole village comes to the same conclusion. A plan of escape is drawn up that is so daring and so dangerous only the most desperate or the most foolish will attempt it. Based on actual historical events, Under Siberian Skies tells the story being lived by millions of refugees today. It is the story of desperate people driven from their homes by political tyranny, looking for a place where they may live in peace and freedom.
