In the fourth and final book of the series we meet Dave Winters, a student at Arizona State, about to graduate and begin his life his as a veterinarian. At the end of his final class, his instructor, Brad Green, offers him an opportunity to interview with him and his partners for a position as a veterinarian. As he meets the Green and Foster families, along with the other families in "The Fold", he becomes intrigued with the closeness of the group. Having been raised in the foster system, he is easily drawn into the warmth and friendships of this extended family. He soon learns that as close as these family members are, there are unspoken questions that remain unanswered. "Why did Maddie flee to Reno and refuse to come home?" "What happened to Tommy and Megan that kept them apart for so long?" "Where is Tommy's biological mother?"As he begins to feel accepted as a part of the group, one of the family members steps up and offers to help him solve the mystery of his own existence, but are some mysteries best left unsolved?
