Ihre Biosynthese erfolgt aus kleinen Bausteinen, ahnlich derjenigen der Fett­ sauren. Ihre Wirkungsweise als Signalstoffe wird in der spezifischen Bin­ dung an Rezeptorproteine in der Gameten-Membran vermutet, die dadurch ihre Raumstruktur andern und somit einen Impuls auslosen.
