Possibilities of a Poetic Pedagogy: Integrating Poetry and Professional Education
Debb Hurlock
A rendering of poetic pedagogy is the heart of this book. The book is contextualized by conversations with nursing students and professors within the Faculty of Nursing, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This books traces conversations with students and professors about how the poetry of Bronwen Wallace has impacted their experiences of nursing education. The interpretation of the conversations was guided by philosophical hermeneutics. The students? experiences of the poetry are interpreted as unique and lush experiential understandings. This book explores and draws forth the potential of these understandings for professional education, and suggests that the possibilities for a pedagogical space may be characterized by such indelible characteristics as surprise; imagination, emotion, paradox; polyphony and the importance of particulars. The intent of this book is not to say this is all there is and ever will be of poetic pedagogy. Rather, poetic pedagogy will continue to take its shape through its possibilities of being integrated into other professional education settings, such as social work, education, and medicine.
