The Unknown Face of Feliks Nowowiejski: the Piano Works
Magdalena Adamek-kurgan
Feliks Nowowiejski, an early twentieth century Polishcomposer and conductor, is primarily recognized asthe author of large musical genres such as operas, ballets, oratorios, masses, and pieces (songs) ofutilitarian value. However, his artistic output alsoincludes numerous piano pieces that up to date havenot received the well-deserved attention. In fact, the existence of these works is known only to arelatively small audience. This book intends tochange that by providing the first comprehensiveoverview of Nowowiejski's piano solo works. This volume was compiled based on a unique access tohand-written manuscripts which were kept by thecomposer's family and which were deposited in twomajor libraries in Poland. It includes biographicaland historical information on the composer, examinesimportant characteristics of Nowowiejski's style, andintroduces twenty-eight of his solo piano pieces. As the author of this book, I strongly believe thatNowowiejski's piano works were unfairly neglected andthey truly deserve to be acknowledged andpopularized. With this book, I hope to introduce thistalented artist to a broader audience.
