Post-marxism and Politics: the Case of the Brazilian Workers' Party
Carlos Pessoa
Since the 1980s, the Brazilian Workers' Party(Partido dos Trabalhadores â¿" PT) receivedattention due to its heterogeneous composition ofsocial activists and innovative governing practices. By making a discourse analysis of the PT, Pessoaexamines the trajectory of its politicaldiscourse, as the party goes from opposition toholding municipal office. After establishing theparty's political discourse based on a hegemonicpolitical strategy and with an objective toradicalize democracy, Pessoa analyses how the PTconfronts institutional limits in trying tomaterialise its original political discourse. The keyquestion that Pessoa tries to answer is whether theparty has been able to bring about transformativechanges once it reached municipal office, or whetherthe PT has become just another political party withinthe Brazilian political regime.
