In June 2000, the German Government and the German electricity supply industry signed the ?Consensus of Opting out of Nuclear Energy?. This agreement has the objective to phase out nuclear power plants and to replace nuclear power with an increasing share of renewables, promoting energy efficiency and energy saving. Sylke Hausmann investigates whether the scenario of abandoning nuclear energy is a realistic, reasonable and feasible aim. The question is put into the context of the current German energy situation and relates to current political and geopolitical issues, such as security of supply and Kyoto Protocol targets. The author conducted interviews with German politicians of all major parties, non-governmental organisations as well as German electricity suppliers. This book is addressed to politicians, energy companies, ecological groups and communities, and everybody interested in nuclear energy in Germany and the German energy situation.
